Afronauts has been on a hiatus leading up to AfroCon 2021 (read about that below!), but we're currently scheduling more guests and if you haven't already viewed us on YouTube, please make sure to check that out! Afronauts has moved from BlogTalk radio to YouTube. For the latest, make sure to subscribe to us on our YouTube channel.
Edfu Foundation was a proud sponsor of AfroCon 2021! AfroCon's creator is our own board member, Dr.LaWana Richmond!

Our Afronauts program held a panel with John Jennings and Kevin Grevioux, and our Agent Afronaut hosted a panel on the black speculative arts movement (BSAM)! Catch most of the panel with our guest stars on our Facebook page and stay tuned for the BSAM panel to post!

EDFU also sponsored and had board members judge the cosplay contest! Congratulations to our 2 winners who took home $350 each!

We had a blast and appreciated everyone who came out and helped make this event harmonious.
EDFU Foundation also supported Veteran Comic Con! It is a fellow California-based comic and arts convention. This year's con was completely virtual and we must say it was so much fun being able to create our own avatars and run around the virtual hall. Let us know what you thought in the comments!

Afronauts hosted a panel for the con! Our own Agent Afronaut, who is serving in the USCG, and our board member, Dr.LaWana Richmond, who is the daughter of a veteran, spoke on comics and how it has helped them cope in life and with service. The panel also featured army veteran Lonnie Lucas.

Afronauts will also be appearing at AfroComicCon 2021, which takes place October 23 & 24. The con is completely virtual this year and includes a cosplay contest!

Registration for vendors, cosplaying, attending, and panel hosts are still open! Stay tuned for more information on our panel for the con!

EDFU Foundation continues to operate the Bay Area Street Pantry every Tuesday at the Melrose Branch Library in Oakland, CA, USA. If you are in need of food for any reason then come to the library at 11:30am. We typically run out of bags just after 12pm.

We recently welcomed a couple of new volunteers, but could always use more!
  • Volunteers with vehicles are needed from 9:45am-10:15am to help transport food and unload it at the library.
  • Volunteers are needed at the library from 10am-11:30am to help pack bags and setup to handout food.
  • Volunteers are needed from 11:30am-1:00pm (typically we are finished an hour or so early) to pass out food to the community and clean up.
  • We're also looking for volunteers to coordinate food pick-up runs throughout the week!

Edfu Foundation supports the United Nations (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The UN created these goals in 2016 with the objective to achieve all 17 goals by the year 2030 to improve the earth and humanity as a whole. - We invite you to explore and learn about these goals as we work to achieve them with partners around the world.
Defintion of Poverty
From Wikipedia.
Poverty is the state of not having enough material possessions or income for a person's basic needs.

Poverty may include social, economic, and political elements.

Absolute poverty measures compare income against the amount needed to meet basic personal needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter.

Relative poverty measures when a person cannot meet a minimum level of living standards, compared to others in the same time and place. Therefore, the floor at which relative poverty is defined varies from one country to another, or from one society to another.
From the United Nations:

More than 700 million people, or 10% of the world population, still live in extreme poverty today, struggling to fulfil the most basic needs like health, education, and access to water and sanitation, to name a few. The majority of people living on less than $1.90 a day live in sub-Saharan Africa. Worldwide, the poverty rate in rural areas is 17.2 per cent—more than three times higher than in urban areas.

For those who work, having a job does not guarantee a decent living. In fact, 8% of employed workers and their families worldwide lived in extreme poverty in 2018. One out of five children live in extreme poverty. Ensuring social protection for all children and other vulnerable groups is critical to reduce poverty.
Why ending poverty is important to EDFU Foundation:
Part of EDFU's mission statement is to provide public health and improve the human condition. In order for humanity to improve we must end poverty in all in it's forms so that all beings have an opportunity to live healthy and productive lives without the effects of hunger, chronic disease and mental illness that are directly caused by poverty.  Poverty can also lead to poor sanitation which directly impacts the environment.

Our emphasis is on women and children. Poverty cannot be eliminated if we do not secure future generations.
What EDFU Foundation is doing to help end poverty:

EDFU  Foundation is the ogranization behind the Bay Area Street Pantry, where we provide bags of groceries to those in need in the Oakland, CA, USA community. There are no requirement checks to receive a bag of food. Our goal is to eliminate food insecurity as well as hunger.

EDFU continues to work with, promote, fundraise, and sponsor organizations, tribes, and those in need around the world to help improve living conditions and provide basic needs, helping to end suffering and poverty.

Give to the Ylê Asé de Yansã

EDFU Foundation has partnered with the Ylê Asé de Yansã of Sao Paulo, Brazil to bring awareness to their struggles as they try to provide shelter, resources, healing, and education to their people. They have met a lot of resistance from their government in trying to secure land and rebuild their falling building for operations. They also have been greatly impacted by COVID-19. They could use your help! Donate to them through our site and select "Ylê Asé de Yansã" or through their campaign at JustGiving.
Volunteer
If you are able to volunteer, our food handout organization is always looking for volunteers!
