Fundraiser for the Ylê Asé de Yansa
Our president, Sheldon Williams, is going to Sao Paulo, Brazil in a week to physically help the Ylê Asé de Yansa rebuild their community building which as caved in and flooded. They are in need of supplies to help them build another building where they can teach and heal their tribe.
The Ylê Asé de Yansa have been greatly affected by COVID-19 and with schools not in session, the children of their community cannot learn, because they do not have access to computers. EDFU Foundation aims to give them at least 2 laptops in order to help them access information and continue their education. We will also use some of the money to help the Ylê Asé de Yansa purchase necessary items for them to rebuild their community center. DONATE

What is EDFU doing to achieve health and well-being for all?
EDFU Foundation has been working with people, tribes, and communities around the world to help improve their well-being. Bay Area Street PantryOur Bay Area Street Pantry helps to provide sanitation pads for women in need and the homeless. We also provided toilet paper during the height of the pandemic and we often provide soap in our weekly bags. Ylê Asé de Yansã EDFU Foundation has been working to campaign and support the Ylê Asé de Yansã of Sal Paulo, Brazil this year. This quilombo has suffered with much resistance from their government over land and has been greatly impacted by COVID-19; struggling to provide education, food, spirituality, and health for their community. Their community building collapsed and caved in, making it impossible to continue to operate in and they need help to rebuild. On October 23, 2021, our president will embark on a trip to Brazil to physically help build the new community building for the Yle Ase De Yansa, as well as provide laptops and school supplies for the children to be able to receive education during the pandemic, as well as help them to purchase agricultural equipment for them to be able to grow their own food sustainably. PLEASE DONATE IF YOU CAN HELP US to purchase the necessary items! This financial campaign is short and we only have 11 days to do it! All donations are tax-deductible through our 501(c)(3). |

Goal #2: Zero Hunger
EDFU | Bay Area Street Pantry | Food Tribe | United Nations
Why ending hunger is important to EDFU................
We highlighted the importance of Sustainable Goal #1 last week: No Poverty. In order for the world to achieve this goal, we must work together to end hunger and food insecurity or we will fail at eliminating poverty. Part of EDFU's mission statement is to provide public health and improve the human condition. To do this, we believe it is important for all of humanity to have access to clean food and sustainable agriculture.
|
What EDFU is doing to help end hunger and food insecurity:
Every week, EDFU provides free food to the Oakland, CA, USA community through our Bay Area Street Pantry program. There is no qualification check or information needed. We provide for anyone who is hungry or in need of food. Our street pantry aims to end both hunger and eliminate food insecurity.
How to get food and help:
The Bay Area Street Pantry operates every Tuesday at the Melrose Branch Library in Oakland, CA, USA. If you are in need of food for any reason then come to the library at 11:30am. We typically run out of bags just after 12pm.

Catch most of the panel with our guest stars on our Facebook page and stay tuned for the BSAM panel to post! EDFU also sponsored and had board members judge the cosplay contest! Congratulations to our 2 winners who took home $350 each! We had a blast and appreciated everyone who came out and helped make this event harmonious.
EDFU Foundation also supported Veteran Comic Con! It is a fellow California-based comic and arts convention. This year's con was completely virtual and we must say it was so much fun being able to create our own avatars and run around the virtual hall. Let us know what you thought in the comments!
Afronauts hosted a panel for the con! Our own Agent Afronaut, who is serving in the USCG, and our board member, Dr.LaWana Richmond, who is the daughter of a veteran, spoke on comics and how it has helped them cope in life and with service. The panel also featured army veteran Lonnie Lucas. |

Defintion of Poverty
Poverty is the state of not having enough material possessions or income for a person's basic needs.
Poverty may include social, economic, and political elements. Absolute poverty measures compare income against the amount needed to meet basic personal needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter. Relative poverty measures when a person cannot meet a minimum level of living standards, compared to others in the same time and place. Therefore, the floor at which relative poverty is defined varies from one country to another, or from one society to another. |
From the United Nations:
More than 700 million people, or 10% of the world population, still live in extreme poverty today, struggling to fulfil the most basic needs like health, education, and access to water and sanitation, to name a few. The majority of people living on less than $1.90 a day live in sub-Saharan Africa. Worldwide, the poverty rate in rural areas is 17.2 per cent—more than three times higher than in urban areas. For those who work, having a job does not guarantee a decent living. In fact, 8% of employed workers and their families worldwide lived in extreme poverty in 2018. One out of five children live in extreme poverty. Ensuring social protection for all children and other vulnerable groups is critical to reduce poverty. |
Why ending poverty is important to EDFU Foundation:
Part of EDFU's mission statement is to provide public health and improve the human condition. In order for humanity to improve we must end poverty in all in it's forms so that all beings have an opportunity to live healthy and productive lives without the effects of hunger, chronic disease and mental illness that are directly caused by poverty. Poverty can also lead to poor sanitation which directly impacts the environment.
Our emphasis is on women and children. Poverty cannot be eliminated if we do not secure future generations. |
What EDFU Foundation is doing to help end poverty:
EDFU Foundation is the ogranization behind the Bay Area Street Pantry, where we provide bags of groceries to those in need in the Oakland, CA, USA community. There are no requirement checks to receive a bag of food. Our goal is to eliminate food insecurity as well as hunger. EDFU continues to work with, promote, fundraise, and sponsor organizations, tribes, and those in need around the world to help improve living conditions and provide basic needs, helping to end suffering and poverty. |

EDFU Foundation participated in this years United Nation's Commission on the Status of Women 65th Session, March 15-26! The event was virtual this year, due to the pandemic, but this new format allowed many people from all over the world to attend and view the events that several organizations held. EDFU held 4 panels in collaboration with women around the world to discuss important topics and bring awareness to the issues that many women are facing. The panel discussions are still posted on our Facebook page and we invite you to visit and take a listen if you missed them when they went live.
EDFU just wrapped up our participation in the United Nations 20th Session of the Permanent Forum for Indigenous People. EDFU held 9 panels as parallel events to discuss human rights, land rights, spirituality, history, culture, agriculture, solutions, and healing! All of the panel discussions can be viewed and heard on our Facebook page if you missed them when they went live! Please stay tuned in the future, as we will bring updates and results in action from the partners and organizations we have worked with during these panels! |

EDFU Foundation continues to operate our Bay Area Street Pantry in Oakland, California, USA. Every Tuesday we guarantee to handout 100 bags of groceries to people in need! There is nothing to sign or to give. We aim to end food insecurity and help people who need to feed their families.
We've been generating a lot of interest lately in volunteers to help handout food! We really appreciate it and can always use help! However, we are in great need of volunteers with vehicles who can help transport food! If we can increase the volume of food delivered to our base at the Melrose Library, we could provide more bags of food to the community!
To volunteer, please fill out our form. We need drivers from 9:45am-10am on Tuesdays and afternoons during the week.
